• This is an introductory course in drawing, watercolour painting, design, sculpture and printmaking. Students will look at examples of western art from 15,000 BCE to 200 BCE as well as works from China and India . Students will learn to analyze and write about art as well as evaluate works. We will go on one mandatory field trip to view art and students will be asked to independently review one show of their choice currently showing in downtown in Oakville .

  • AVI201 is an entry level course that teaches the following skills and understanding and media: figure drawing and how to show emotion and movement, pet portraiture, perspective, use of different pencils, charcoal, chalk and oil pastels, using serigraphy to put a design on a t-shirt; ceramics- hand building and working on the wheel; applied design, acrylic painting and cartooning.

    In art appreciation and history, students will be learning how to decode images and a continuing exploration of the development of monumental buildings. We will look at the changing roles of the figure in western art from the early Christian Period to the High Renaissance and how artists of these periods constantly re-evaluated the picture plane as their philosophy, media and understanding of perspective changed.

  • AVI4M1 is a media and survey course divided into 2 distinct terms..

    Term 1: Students will review drawing, painting, printmaking and 3 dimensional skills through guided projects. They will learn about modern art movements, early 20th century philosophy, social and political events that have impacted on how artists have defined and interpreted the world. Ford, Dali, Einstein, Freud, the Wright Brothers, 2 world wars, Existentialism, Surrealism, Futurism , Dada , Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, International style architecture.

    Term 2 : Students will plan and execute their own show on a theme that is interesting to them. They will develop works in any media of their choice- video, photography, pottery, sculpture, painting, printmaking. Art history focuses on contemporary Postmodern art, philosophy, social and political events, space exploration and the influence of the electronic age on cultural expression. Pop art, performance art, deconstructivism, installations, racial and gender equality, feminism, film and video, animation, computer art and postmodern architecture.

    Students will leave this course with a portfolio of their work.

Students will create photographic artworks that explore a wide range of subject matter, styles, media and techniques, and will evaluate photographs, providing criteria for their judgements. They will also examine historical and cultural contexts of Western art and photography(including Canadian and other world cultures) to support their study of photography.
